These chain of mountains cover the majority of the northwest end of the Byzantine Empire. One cannot go through the Byzantine Empire to the Kingdom of Italy by land without passing through these mountains. These mountains are full of mythological creatures because not many people will go through the mountains. This makes passage through them dangerous and unwise for small bands of people.
