Nicaea The City of Nicaea was founded long ago during the time of Alexander the Great. Built with great symmetry in the form of a square, it is surrounded by a wall of cementing stone that has lasted for thousands of years. Rocky roads all intersect each other at right angles. Together with four gates they form a monument in the center of the city that can be seen from the top of all four gates. The city is located at an important crossroads that attracts trade from all over the Byzantine Empire, being only 45 miles from Constantinople. |

Constantinople Constantinople is more than the largest city in the Byzantine Empire, it is also the capital. Located in the center of the Empire, A total of three walls surround the city, which is built on seven hills. The Sea of Marmara flows into the city along with the Golden Horn, an inlet that turns into a river through parts of the city. Rollup bridges and archer towers add to the city’s defense along the wall. Inside the city, the areas are split into two areas. The first is a series of towers, castles, and noble houses accompanied by a barracks and a market district for the rich. The majority of nobles and the Emperor live in what is called the “Upper Hills”. In the “Lower Hills” middle class and poor are mixed and positioned often near the Grand Cathedral. |

Danube River This long flowing river is the second largest in the entire continent. It travels from the Black Sea, just north of Constantinople, and across the remaining lands of the Byzantine Empire before it ends just north of the Kingdom of Italy. Many small port towns are stationed along the river, bringing in many trading items from the Capital. |

Thessalonica The “second city” in the Byzantine Empire, it is second only to Constantinople in wealth and size. Like Constantinople the city borders a body of water on its eastern side. To its south are towering hills and mountains. With a humid climate and frequent rainfalls, the city is often struck by mists and fogs that cover the entirety of the city. To the East of Constantinople, it is closer to the Kingdom of Italy then the capital. The city itself is fashioned with many military and administrative buildings since the heart of the army is trained here. Like Constantinople it is separate by rich, middle class, and poor. The rich occupy the south eastern section between the mountains and the body of water. The middle class occupy the northwestern section, and are made up of artists, merchants, and knights. And finally the poor stay to the outskirts of the city. |

Dyrrachium Just across the Adriatic Sea from the Kingdom of Italy, the city was built with its back to the sea. Around the city are mountains and hills that act as a natural defense against any invading enemy from the north. The city is hit by hot summers and cold winters during the different seasons. Like the majority of large cities, it is surrounded by a formidable wall of stone. It is one of the oldest cities in the Byzantine Empire and there is a much higher mix of nobles and middle class in the city. |

Dinaric Alps These chain of mountains cover the majority of the northwest end of the Byzantine Empire. One cannot go through the Byzantine Empire to the Kingdom of Italy by land without passing through these mountains. These mountains are full of mythological creatures because not many people will go through the mountains. This makes passage through them dangerous and unwise for small bands of people. |
