Just across the Adriatic Sea from the Kingdom of Italy, the city was built with its back to the sea. Around the city are mountains and hills that act as a natural defense against any invading enemy from the north. The city is hit by hot summers and cold winters during the different seasons. Like the majority of large cities, it is surrounded by a formidable wall of stone. It is one of the oldest cities in the Byzantine Empire and there is a much higher mix of nobles and middle class in the city.
